About My Biography
Dr. Jacques Nsengiyumva is a Rwandan environmental scientist, entrepreneur, & sustainability leader who earned his PhD in Environmental Science from Atlantic International University,USA . His doctoral research focuses on phytoremediation-based wastewater treatment systems, emphasizing nutrient recovery, circular economy integration, & nature-based solutions for sustainable sanitation.
He is the Founder & Managing Director of CS NJEMA Ltd, a pioneering company specializing in organic fertilizer production through sustainable waste recycling & resource recovery. Under his leadership, CS NJEMA Ltd has implemented innovative wastewater treatment systems and large-scale organic fertilizer initiatives in institutional and community settings across Rwanda, advancing soil restoration, environmental protection, and climate resilience.
With over 15 years of experience in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), pollution control, and regulatory compliance, Dr. Jacques bridges scientific research with practical implementation. His work aligns with global sustainability frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), & demonstrates scalable models for transforming waste into value in emerging economies.
Dr. Jacques holds an MSc in Environmental Science & Technology (Water Quality Management) from UNESCO-IHE, Delft (Netherlands), postgraduate studies in Emotional Intelligence & Leadership from George Mason University (USA), and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Rwanda. He is a recipient of the Global Community Leader Fellowship Award from the U.S. Department of State.
His main engagements focus on nature-based wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery systems, circular economy innovation, environmental governance, and sustainable agriculture in Africa.
Dr. NSENGIYUMVA has worked extensively with international organizations, including the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, & UNIDO, contributing to global sustainability initiatives. His innovative work in Organic Fertilizer Production & Wastewater Treatment has led to the granting of Patent Rights for eco-friendly technologies in these fields, further solidifying his reputation as a pioneer in sustainable environmental practices. As part of his ongoing commitment to sustainability, he has developed and implemented community-tailored solutions across Rwanda, focusing on wastewater recycling in high-pollution areas. His efforts extend to the recovery of nutrients from human waste across Rwanda’s prison system, transforming it into organic fertilizer for the restoration of degraded soils.
In his previous role as Lead Enforcement & Compliance Expert at the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), He played a crucial role in ensuring regulatory compliance & driving environmental sustainability across multiple sectors. His leadership helped reinforce Rwanda’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. Mr. Jacques is also an active academic contributor who served as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) & has participated in various research projects at institutions such as the University of Rwanda (UR/CST) & the University of Texas at San Antonio (UT/San Antonio College). His academic focus includes Sustainable Waste Management, Renewable Energy, and Environmental Management System & Integrated Farming.
Dr. Jacques has participated in numerous international conferences and workshops on environmental sustainability, including events at British Columbia University (Canada), Centre for Science & Environment (India), and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change (Germany). He has also received specialized training in wastewater treatment in Texas (USA), waste management in South Korea, and environmental management in China. His additional training includes social responsibility in environmental assessment (Rwanda), PCBs testing (Morocco), and wetland restoration (Belgium). These experiences have further enhanced his expertise in sustainable practices and eco-friendly leadership.
As the Founder & Managing Director of CS NJEMA Ltd, Jacques combines his passion for environmental stewardship with his entrepreneurial vision, spearheading innovations in Waste Management, Organic Fertilizer Production, and Sustainable Farming.
